Shakil Khan, the site's founder, told Newsbytes that the new site is unique in the industry, since it doesn't limit users to phones in a given country, or charge to send each message. "SMS text messaging has become hugely popular with the 15-24 age group, thanks to the pay-as-you-go phone revolution - people like students, those starting out in their first jobs and so on," he said. Khan went on to say that, in the same way that pay-as-you-go phones have democratized mobile usage, SMSboy. com will democratize Web-to-SMS messaging services by making them available to anyone in Europe, free of charge. Khan said that he has been working on the idea behind the site for around six months, but the service really came together in the last month or so, when he realized he could run the entire service on a single Windows-driven server. "Using this approach means I can keep the costs down, and so make the advertising pay for the service," he said. According to Khan, SMS messaging has a far greater reach than WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) at the moment and is likely to remain in the lead for years to come, especially with young, non-corporate users. "Even with the next generation of mobiles, WAP services will still be too expensive for the majority of mobile users, so SMS will still be relevant.
